The Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SR&ED) program is a tax-incentive program developed by the government of Canada and the provinces to

• - assist Canadian companies, individuals and partnerships;
• - foster scientific research and experimental development in Canada;
• - encourage the development of technologically new and improved products and processes;
• - improve cost competitiveness in the market; and
• - provide for expanded markets.

The program accomplishes this by supporting basic or applied research as well as "experimental development." Experimental development is defined as the attempt to achieve technological advancement for the purpose of either creating new—or improving existing—materials, devices, products or processes.
